Phytosterols 800 mg is a food supplement containing phytosterols, that reduce LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol.

Phytosterols are plant lipids. These are components naturally present in plants and in all foods of plant origin. Good food sources of phytosterols are vegetable oils, grains, nuts, legumes, fruits and vegetables.

The origin of cholesterol in our body is of endogenous origin (synthesized by the liver) and of dietary origin. Cholesterol is transported in the blood by “lipoproteins” or LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein), low density proteins, and HDL (High Density Lipoprotein), high density lipoproteins. “Total cholesterol” includes HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.

The main action of phytosterols is the inhibition of intestinal absorption of cholesterol. In fact, these compounds compete with cholesterol in the intestine, and thus reduce its absorption. The cholesterol will therefore not be absorbed and will be eliminated in the stools.

What is the exact mode of action of phytosterols on cholesterol levels?

Although structurally very close to cholesterol, phytosterols are poorly absorbed by the body and remain in the intestinal lumen before being eliminated in the stools. The main mechanism responsible for the hypocholesterolemic effect is the inhibition of intestinal absorption of cholesterol.
