DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid of the omega-3 family. These fatty acids are said to be essential because they are provided only by the food. It is produced from alpha-linolenic acid and transformed by an enzymatic mechanism (elongase-desaturase). These enzymes are also used in the transformation of omega-6 fatty acids.
